Last month, the Danish Christian weekly published an uplifting article by Edith Theis-Nielsen, titled “Wash Down the News with Hope”. She is part of the Online Writers Friendship Group, which meets monthly, and was inspired to write this piece after their January meeting on Hope.
In her article, she reflects on how overwhelming and bitter the daily news can be, but rather than let it weigh her down, Edith turns to scripture — washing away her worries with a cup of hope, sweetened with the reassurance that God loves and cares for us.
To stay grounded, Edith draws from her storehouse of Bible verses — each one a reminder of God’s promises:
📖 Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.”
Even when the future feels uncertain, God is in control:
📖 Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Edith encourages everyone to gather their own ‘cup of scripture’ to savour alongside the news — verses filled with hope, love, and faith to lift as a shield (Ephesians 6:16). She also points to the refuge found in Joshua 1:5, Philippians 4:6-7, and Psalm 34:7.
When Edith was a new believer, she wrote Bible verses on small cards to carry with her — drawing strength from them whenever she sought comfort. She even placed verses around her home as constant reminders of God’s presence.
